Welcome to UKAWJ

Since its formation in 2003, the UKAWJ has welcomed members of both sexes and from all levels of the judiciary, including salaried and fee paid judges in courts and tribunals, and from all jurisdictions in the United Kingdom. Our focus is, of course, on matters of particular concern to women, principally the issues they face in the law and the justice system as well as issues of particular concern to women judges. But our inclusive membership gives us a perspective which other associations do not have. Our conferences, where there is always an impressive array of speakers, are open to all judges, whether or not they are members, and focus on subjects which are of interest to us all.

Full members of the Association are automatically members of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ), which holds biennial world conferences attended by judges from all over the world. It also has an impressive training programme on the jurisprudence of equality which has proved particularly valuable in developing countries. In 2012, Lady Hale will become president of the IAWJ and in 2012 the Association will be hosting the world conference in London, an important international event.

Membership of the Association currently stands at considerably over 200, and continues to rise. The President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and the Lord Chief Justice of England are members.
